Video Games in the Classroom

This week I learned all about the different types of video games that could be used in the classroom. Before this week the only games that game to mind were math games like Prodigy, although there is so much more than this and so much I also experienced when I was a child in Elementary School. In this post I will sort through some of the video games available according to subject.

Math: Prodigy and Cool Math Games

Prodigy is a more recent math game commonly played in Elementary/Middle school settings. According to the Prodigy website, this is a great video game for engaging students. Students will answer math questions to complete quests and earn rewards. Teachers can use this as an assessment tool because they can visualize student progress.

Cool Math Games is a website I used when I was younger and I am unsure if it is as common today, although this is a great website for finding a variety of math games. This is a great tool for teachers to use when they want their students to have a bit of free time that is still educational, or for helping students explore the web. Here is a video of me attempting one game I found on the website:

Art: Tux Paint, Microsoft Paint

When I was in Elementary School I remember absolutely loving Tux Paint. I would constantly use this application during my free time. I was ecstatic to see that the game is still available to download! Tux Paint is a lot like Microsoft Paint except they have a bit of a different look and some additional content. Here is a video of somebody creating the solar system with Tux Paint:

Microsoft Paint is another awesome application for art. I never had much experience with it, but the great thing is I believe it comes already installed on all Microsoft computers. The application is very easy to use. Children can take part in specified tasks or create something from their imagination.

English: All the Right Type

My mind was blown when a fellow student of mine mentioned All The Right Type again, what a throwback! This is a great application for helping kids learn to type. Children will go through different stages learning how to type certain letters and then start to type faster and faster (I was one of the top in my class, not to brag or anything). Now there is an online portal so you do not even have to download the app! This application is not free according to the website, however, I believe this is a necessary purchase to ensure students know how to type (especially in this new information/technology era).

PBS Kids by subject

There is also the PBS Kids website where students or teachers can search by subject and by topic to find the games that best suit the challenge.

Minecraft lesson plans by subject

You can also let your students play Minecraft in your classroom for educational purposes. There are Minecraft lesson plans available online to sift through. The best part is that these resources are free to use!

Dirty Teaching: A Beginner’s Guide to Teaching Outdoors

When I first started my field experience in the classroom last semester I was so excited to learn that my mentor teacher did an outdoor class everyday. I am very interested in outdoor education because it helps students regulate in so many different areas. One of my passions is helping students connect to nature. My mentor teacher once told me that we should teach children to love our Earth so that they naturally want to protect it, rather than scaring them into protecting it. This line stuck with me the most, and one of my goals as an educator is to attempt this.

One amazing resource I have found that goes above and beyond in teaching children about the outdoors is a book I bought from Amazon called Dirty Teaching: A Beginner’s Guide to Teaching Outdoors by Juliet Robertson. This book showcases all the benefits of teaching outdoors and also provides a huge variety of engaging activities.

https://www.amazon.ca/Dirty-Teaching-Beginners-Learning-Outdoors/dp/1781351074

The book description on Amazon provides all the topics that are covered in this book: “Topics covered include: forest schools, learning outside the classroom, outdoor education, nature activities, caring for the environment, play in schools, investigative play, urban outdoor activities, problem-solving, creative thinking and strategies for supporting curriculum objectives.” (Dirty Teaching on Amazon)

Make sure that the children are getting free play as well. This is how children learn to socialize, develop independence, improve physical coordination, and have a good time without adult direction.

(Dirty teaching, pp. 12)

This quote explains how outdoor free play is important in an outdoor class. My mentor teacher shared with me her thoughts on what an outdoor classroom should look like and one of these aspects was free play. Instead of getting involved, my mentor teacher would observe from a distance and watch as students learn to strengthen their relationships and solve problems. I believe that doing this outdoor is a great way to do this because student’s moods are improved when they are outdoors so their cognitive and social skills may be working well.

The book dirty teaching suggests using songs and music as a stimulus in outdoor learning. Some ideas for this are creating a music playlist for when you are outside with your class, creating an outdoor music wall, and creating musical instruments outside

(dirty teaching, pp. 81-82

Outdoor education can mean so many things. My mentor teacher last semester taught me that there are three aspects to outdoor learning: learning in nature, learning about nature, and learning for nature. Learning in nature refers to the curriculum and doing lessons outdoors. When I saw this quote in Dirty Teaching I was blown away by the fact I have only ever thought about doing science and PE outdoors. I had never thought about taking on music lessons outdoors. I absolutely love the idea of creating music outside in nature because I believe it helps children connect to themselves, music, and nature. Creating musical instruments outside seems like a fantastic idea to me. I even looked up some outdoor music walls and this is what I found:

What Does it Mean to be Healthy?

There are so many diet trends always going around. Keto, juicing, and DASH are among the many. In my opinion, none of these are necessary for being healthy. Although, like breastcancer.org states, every person’s idea of being healthy is different.

To breastcancer.org, eating healthy means eating a variety of foods that gives you the nutrients that you need to maintain health, feel good, and have energy. So as long as your body is getting carbohydrates, protein, fat, water, vitamins, and minerals in a sufficient amount, you are good to go! So what if this means stuffing your face in a box of cookies every once in a while?

In this post, I will be exploring a bit more about recipes to share that are packed full of nutrients. A couple of weeks ago I was very sick and I did not eat anything the whole day. My body was fatigued, I felt even sicker from not eating, and I really just needed some nutrients in my body. What did I do? I ordered Subway to my door. Now I know this is not the best of options but it is definitely nutrient-packed. We got protein (turkey), fat (cheese, sauce, and bread), carbs (bread and sauce), and vitamins/minerals (spinach, tomatoes, cucumber). With these recipes, I hope to help you eat some nutrients when maybe you have not eaten much that day (and you want to opt for something a little more healthy than subway). Sometimes we do not eat much, for whatever reason, but t is important to remember to eat because your body needs it!

Here is a recipe for a great macro bowl. The great thing about bowls is there is so much you can put in there, and you can pretty much just fit whatever from the fridge in there. This recipe is a great example of a nutrient-packed recipe with chickpeas, kale, rice, and much more.

The Macro Bowl with Turmeric-Tahini Dressing

What’s even easier than bowls? Salads. This salad has lots of nutrients with its chicken, avocado, strawberry, and spinach. I am not sure if you have ever had strawberries in your salad, but you will forever after this.

Lastly, a pure staple in my life, beef and broccoli. Rice gives you carbs, beef gives you protein and fat, and broccoli gives you loads of vitamins and minerals including iron, which will get your energy up.

I hope this post made you hungry and made you want to eat some delicious food!

Blog Post #1

Beginning the ukulele, I have decided to look up a video on YouTube for an easy song to learn. A song that came up is “You Are My Sunshine” and I thought this would be great for younger children. I watched the video and went along with the video. I wrote down in my notebook a chart of what the notes I will be playing are. This was I can use this notebook for reference when practicing the song. This song does not have any strumming patterns so it isn’t too difficult. I have continued to practice this song about 3-5 times a week for approximately 20 minutes each time. I have progressively become better at singing and playing at the same time. I am very tone-deaf so this was a bit difficult at first.

Additionally, since I have just started to learn the ukulele and it has been a long time since I have read sheet music, I decided to use a YouTube video instead of reading sheet music. I do not see myself using sheet music for my second song, but possibly my last song for the final if I am feeling confident.

Here is a photo of what I wrote in my notebook. I sketched the finger placement for C major, F major, and G major. I have been able to memorize these finger placements very easily due to writing them in my book because I find I am able to retain information better when I write it down.

Here is the video I used for “My Little Sunshine”

That’s it… I am Not Eating Anymore Today.

Do you ever just not want to eat anything for dinner? Maybe you had some foods that are unhealthier during the day or the day before and you do not want to “hurt” your body anymore for the day? Well it is still important to get all the nutrients you need throughout the day and you should not deprive your body of these nutrients. We all need food to keep us going. Sometimes this can be very difficult because even if we are hungry, we do not want to eat because of the number of calories we have already consumed, the number of fats we have consumed, etc. Even if we have had a lot of calories, when our body is hungry it is important to listen to it and feed ourselves. According to Dr. Mehmet, skipping hunger cues causes our body to slow down and conserve the calories we already have, eventually storing more fat for our next meals in an attempt to store calories for tough times ahead (Why Should I Eat Healthy Food When I Am Hungry?, n.d.).

I follow an influencer on TikTok who posts amazing recipes. The one I have attached below is a recipe for summer rolls, which are a very light food. This recipe is specifically great because you can add whatever you want to it and wrap it in rice paper. This video includes lettuce, carrot, edamame, avocado, onion, cabbage, and pineapple. There is also a peanut sauce dip to go with it which tastes AMAZING. So, if you are ever feeling bad about what you have been eating lately and your body needs something light and healthy, this is the recipe for you! Remember to always eat when your body needs it!

Healthier Banana Muffins!

Over the weekend I decided to bake something, and normally I do not like baking at all because my oven is terrible and does not seal properly. Although, I was craving something sweet and decided to try it out anyways with my over set a bit higher than normal and they turned out great! Here is the video:

Here is the link to the recipe:

Skinny Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins

P.S.  I do not like the name “skinny” but these muffins are definitely healthier than normal muffins. Like I have said, eat whatever you want but if you want a recipe with a bit less fat, sugar, and calories… This is the recipe for you!

Photo Editing and Bernie Sanders

This week in class we learned a bit about graphic creations and how to edit photos. Now back when I was in middle school, I edited my photos a lot. I am talking a whole new background, terrible saturation, and song lyrics everywhere. It was quite embarrassing. Although, aside from learning, being embarrassed is what middle school is all about.

Now I wanted to find a better photo to help picture all of the above, but it turns out I deleted all the photos and I am honestly am a little sad about it. However, I did find this photo so that is something! This was taken just after grade 6 when I was at a summer camp. I blocked out the girl’s faces because I do not talk to any of them anymore and I do not know if they would condone this image.

I was experimenting a little bit with the Bernie Sanders image trying to see if I could make the photo of him look more saturated/bright/etc depending on where he was placed in a photo. I found this background image on google with a creative commons license and used the Bernie Sanders clipart we were provided in class. I edited this photo on PowerPoint (I never knew this was even an option). I ended up creating three different Bernie’s and placed him on three different spots on the road trying to make it look like he was actually sitting there. I paid attention to the distance and shadows and think it turned out pretty well. Here have a look!

My First Blog Post!

Hello! My name is Zoe and I am a second-year UVIC Education student. Aside from education, some of my hobbies include being out in nature, reading, coffee, and all animals (especially frogs and pigs).

I am very excited to start this new journey of an ePortfolio! This is my first real blog as a University student and I am looking forward to seeing where this journey takes me. I know that engaging in online resources is very helpful as an educator but it is also very intimidating to me. When I was in my teens I had Tumblr and Twitter for my “blogging” needs but, of course, it was very much stuff that was not relevant to my professional self.

I have created a Twitter account, @zoejacobson63, for anybody who would like to give me a follow! I am already stressing about all the resources available in the social media world though. I have so far spent quite a bit of time surfing through all the different accounts I can follow and all the information they have… it is a lot. Although, I am confident that with time I will get used to scrolling through the Twitter feed and enjoy all the benefits it has to offer!

I can already tell this ePortfolio is going to be very beneficial for me as a future educator. I hope to continue to use it after this semester ends and keep it for all the resources I (and maybe others) can use later in life as well. I am very nervous but also excited to continue on this tech-y (I know that is not a word but it feels right to use) journey.
